Is Bullying a Management Style?

Having participated in many management training programs over the years I never saw the topic of workplace bullying as a part of the experience.

Often the "difficult employee" was discussed and techniques were developed to deal more effectivley with that subset of the employee population. But it was always assumed that these people were in lower level positions and that they could be "managed". The problem with an overbearing, bully for a boss was accepted as just something one had to cope with on one's own, and it wasn't a big deal. After all, no one wants to admit they are intimidated by their boss's aggressive style.

That always struck me as disengenuous in the real world.

Now we know more about the impact of bullying in the workplace, and thanks to my partner, Jim McCann, here are some of the statistics:

 

 

To defend a Harassment lawsuit can range between $50 000 to $100 000 and take three to five years to settle.

The average total cost of Presenteeism is estimated to be approximately 60% of the cost of worker illness or approximately 2.4 days lost per year.

According to a 2008 survey, 53% of targets stated their productivity had been reduced by between 50 and 70%.

According to the Workplace Bullying Institute 45% of Targets suffer with stress related illnesses.

A British National Labor Force Survey indicated that 13.5 million working days in 2009/2010 were lost due to stress, depression and anxiety in the UK, making mental health issues the largest contributor to the days lost from work-related ill-health in 2008/09.

Primary Care Physicians report that approximately 1/3 of all diagnoses of work related illness are mental health related, with an average length of absence of 26.8 working days.
